A Hard-Won Ceasefire: A Step towards Justice for Palestine

After 15 months of conflict, Israel and Hamas have agreed to a cease-fire negotiated by the United States and Qatar. The deal calls for an end to Israeli attacks, the release of 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, humanitarian supplies, and the evacuation of Israeli troops. While it provides temporary comfort, it does not address the underlying causes of the conflict, and the Palestinian quest for justice and freedom continues under uncertainty.

A Hard-Won Ceasefire: A Step towards Justice for Palestine
Ceasefire in GAZA

Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire after 15 months of horrific conflict. This is an important moment in a continuous battle for freedom and independence. The US and Qatar reached the ceasefire, which attempts to put an end to Israel's relentless military assault on Gaza while simultaneously focusing on the suffering of Palestinians caught in the crossfire of occupation. The deal, though not entirely clear, suggests the release of Palestinian prisoners and hostages, offering a rare sense of hope to Palestinians.

What's in the Ceasefire Deal?

As officials from both sides confirm that several elements are included in the deal, though still shrouded in some secrecy, the people of Gaza feel a much-needed relief from its oppressed population.

·        Immediate Ceasefire: The deal includes a full ceasefire, halting the Israeli bombing campaign that has ravaged Gaza for over a year. This will allow the ravaged region to breathe again, providing a respite from the ongoing violence and destruction by Israeli attacks.

·        Release Palestinian detainees: About 1,000 Palestinian prisoners seeking release. This includes many who have been detained in Israeli prisons for several years. In their dungeons, most of these Palestinian prisoners face miserable treatment and unreasonable imprisonment. All of these political prisoners are known Palestinian activists, students, or even political leaders fighting Palestine's perpetual cause for liberty.

·        Humanitarian Aid: The agreement also includes increased humanitarian aid to Gaza. The Gaza's infrastructure has been catastrophically destroyed. The medical supplies and food are in short supply. The humanitarian aid distribution is a lifeline for millions of people who have been subjected to a harsh siege.

·        Israeli Troops Withdrawal: Israeli troops will leave Gaza. This will allow Palestinians to return home and begin rebuilding their broken lives. It is a crucial step toward ending the occupation and restoring Palestinian ownership over their land.

Three Phases to Peace: A Long-Awaited Breakthrough

The three-phase ceasefire is structured as a step toward a lasting peace for Palestine as follows:

Phase 1: Ceasefire and Prisoner Exchange

The first phase will last for six weeks, with a full ceasefire and the exchange of prisoners. It is anticipated that 33 hostages held by Hamas will be released, with the Palestinian prisoners' release spread across the course of the ceasefire. For the people of Gaza, this is a chance to go home. Many have not been able to do so for months because of the military attack that has been ongoing.

Phase 2: Final End to the War

The second phase will be a permanent ceasefire, with Israel's military completely withdrawing from Gaza. The remaining hostages will be released, and more Palestinian prisoners will be released. This phase is important for a just and lasting peace because it would end Israel's military operations in the region and begin the process of dismantling its oppressive occupation.

Phase 3: Rebuilding Gaza

The last part will be a reconstruction phase in Gaza, an activity that might take several years. It left the area badly damaged with much of its infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, destroyed. This stage shall give Palestinians room to begin starting their lives once more and their communities, but that will need a lot of international cooperation as well so Gaza can heal, grow, and prosper.

Struggles by Palestinians for Freedom:

The fact that this is a ceasefire agreement does not remove the reasons why the conflict had to start. Israel has continued to occupy the land of Palestine, displace Palestinians systematically, and continue its repeated violation of international law; this is not a situation that can be treated as anything other than an extreme injustice. As the world watches, one must acknowledge that this ceasefire in no way eliminates decades of oppression at the hands of Israel against Palestinians.

Hamas is more than a symbol of Palestinian resistance is an expression of the popular will of the overwhelming majority of Palestinians, who seem to have no other option but to resist Israeli aggression. The people of Gaza have, under collective punishment, forced displacement, and a ruthless blockade, been living in a perpetual siege. Hamas has played a crucial role in the fight for Palestinian dignity and sovereignty.

The attack on October 7, which has set off the war raging now, was an answer to the years of violence that Israel unleashed against Palestinians in general and particularly to the cold-blooded killing of civilians and the continuous illegal settlement expansion in the West Bank. For most Palestinians, what Hamas did was an immediate defense of their land and people against the brutal tactics of the occupation.

Questions Remain: Is This a True Path to Peace?

Despite the truce, there are many unanswered questions.

Will Israel honor the word and purpose of the truce or continue to violate Palestinian freedom and dignity?

The fact that Hamas is still in power in Gaza after years of Israeli attempts to wipe out it reflects the Palestinian people's bravery and persistence.

For Palestine, the ceasefire is a step toward justice. The journey ahead is still long and tough for them. The Palestinians have been battling for their freedom for decades, and while this agreement gives a brief halt in violence, it must be followed by serious action to address the root causes of the conflict.

A Fragile Peace:

This ceasefire agreement is hopeful; however, one must remember that peace is never easy. History has seen breakages of the ceasefire and the skirmishes quickly escalate into all-out warfare. The Israeli troop presence in the buffer zones in Gaza has one questioning whether this ceasefire will just be a pause or if it will lead to a solution for the future.

It will depend, finally, on the Palestinian people's will and right to self-determination as they seek justice and equality amidst crushing odds. The international community should persist in supporting the Palestinian people's right to resist occupation in a bid to win peace and dignity for all their citizens.
