A judge has dismissed the election case brought by the special counsel against Trump.

A federal judge dismissed a case against Donald Trump, accusing him of trying to overturn the 2020 election results. The dismissal, requested by special prosecutor Jack Smith, was based on a Justice Department policy protecting sitting presidents. The case can be refiled after Trump’s second term. Smith also sought the dismissal of another case involving Trump’s handling of classified documents, with Trump pleading not guilty in both cases.

A judge has dismissed the election case brought by the special counsel against Trump.

A federal judge has thrown out a significant case against Donald Trump, which accused him of illegally attempting to overturn the 2020 election results.

Special prosecutor Jack Smith, who filed the charges, requested the case be dismissed, referring to a Justice Department policy that prohibits prosecuting a sitting president.

Judge Tanya Chutkan dismissed the case "without prejudice," meaning the charges could be brought again after Trump completes a second term.

Smith has also requested the dismissal of a separate case accusing Trump of mishandling classified documents. Trump had denied wrongdoing in both cases by pleading not guilty.
