Thousands flee homes as floods hit Australia

In northern Queensland, Australia, heavy rains have led to flooding , causing a woman's death and forcing thousands from their homes.Authorities have issued warnings about flood waters potentially rising to second storey levels , labelling the situation dangerous and life threatening. In the past day , over 700mm (26 inches) of rain has fallen , with concerns about continuing "record rainfalls" into Monday.

These floods could be the worst over 60 years , according to Queensland State Premier David Crisafulli, who noted the unusual intensity and duration of the rain.Residents of Twonsville were instructed to evacuate by midday on Sunday ,and 100,000 sandbags were distributed to mitigate flood damage. Road closures between Townsville and Carins have hindered rescue and sandbagging efforts
